Marine Propulsion Module 2: Marine Propulsors Characteristics

The training series Marine Propulsion Systems is a unique technical and international oriented training for those who wish to acquire in-depth knowledge of the design of different marine propulsion systems. Topics during the five modules range from different power plant concepts and components to integrating components into properly matched propulsion systems. Working principles and characteristics of propulsors, internal combustion engines and electric power generation and distribution systems will all be dealt with throughout the training series. The series concludes with a module on matching engines with propulsors including off-design operation of propulsion systems.

The second module ‘Marine Propulsor Characteristics’ will provide the participants with a thorough understanding of the working principles of a wide variety of marine propulsors.

Objective

The main characteristics and design aspects of the main marine propulsors will be explained during the second module. The participants will learn about the characteristics of the different propulsors and their design considerations. The physical and hydrodynamic principles of propellers, such as lift, wake and cavitation will be explained. Distinctive differences between the propulsors will be laid out. The theory is practised by means of exercises during the module. At the end of this module the participant will be able to decide which type of propulsor will be suited best for a particular vessel design.

  • Introduction to: ship propulsion, propulsors, drives and basic hydrodynamics
  • Propeller geometry, working principle of a propeller, pitch and slip
  • Wake, cavitation and noise
  • Fixed pitch propellers: general aspects, scope of supply, ship aspects and design aspects
  • Controllable pitch propellers: characteristics, ship and propeller design considerations, gears, hydraulics and control systems
  • Steerable thrusters: thruster configuration, nozzle design, mechanical aspects
  • Compact steerable thrusters: Z-drive, gearboxes, (modular) design aspects
  • Thruster types: Modular, retractable, can-mounted, containerised, de-mountable
  • Podded propellers: system overview, design pod and electric motor, steering mechanism, assembly and installation aspects
  • Waterjets: basic concept, differences with propellers, performance, pump design and characteristics, operational requirements
  • Voith Schneider propeller: working principle and characteristics, roll stabilisation, installation, application
  • Voith Inline thrusters
  • Transverse thrusters: selection criteria, performance, interaction of multiple propellers, noise and vibration, design consideration

Target group

This module is intended for designers and (sales) engineers who deal with the integration or the design of marine propulsion systems and in particular marine propulsors during concept design phase. It will also be of interest to people who come across aspects of these systems during their (daily) work and who wish to learn more about the working principle of marine propulsors and marine propulsion systems. The international setting offers participants a unique opportunity to gain knowledge and to network with colleagues, clients and suppliers. This enables them to position their companies even better in the international shipbuilding cluster.

Lecturers

Netherlands Maritime Technology organises the second module in close cooperation with Wärtsilä Netherlands BV and Voith Turbo BV. The lecturers are Tim Cales en Anton Voermans from Wärtsilä Netherlands BV and Edwin Bonsen BSc of Voith Turbo BV.
