Transparency within the maritime broadband market is a very important issue to a large number of shipping companies and maritime suppliers. The Platform Broadband@Sea is supporting this transparency and also aims to promote broadband usage onboard seagoing vessels.
Netherlands Maritime Technology recognized the potential of broadband connections for sea going vessels and activated both suppliers and ship owners to participate in a Broadband@Sea project. This included the development of a cost comparison form for broadband, several satellite communication trials and studies on different applications and precompetitive developments for maritime broadband. After completing this project a platform was started to share knowledge on maritime ICT applications. It links ship-owners and suppliers within Europe.
Today the Platform Broadband@Sea consists of twelve shipowners, thirteen suppliers and two service providers. Netherlands Maritime Technology is responsible for the overall organization and coordination of this platform. We organize a platform meeting, at least twice a year, in which the newest trends and development are discussed. The purpose of those meeting is to share knowledge between suppliers and end-users.
