Training Design of Marine Auxiliary Systems – Module 1: Introduction Systems Architecture

The training series Design of Marine Auxiliary Systems covers the main aspects of marine auxiliary systems on board of vessels or offshore platforms. During four modules the participants are given an overview of the main auxiliary systems, their main components, the fundamental working principles and the design aspects & considerations. The theory is practised by means of exercises during the modules. Each module can be followed separately, but combined they provide the participant a complete overview of and the in-depth knowledge required to design all marine auxiliary systems.

Aim

Module 1 is intended to give an overview of all relevant aspects of auxiliary system design: functions, systems, components, layout of systems, pump/compressor and system characteristics and their interaction. The module includes both lectures and practical exercises.

Subjects

Topics include:

  • Introduction into systems engineering: Functions, systems, components
  • Required knowledge of physics in the second and third module: first law of thermodynamics, ideal gas model, incompressible fluids, fluid mechanics, heat transfer. Architecture of (distribution) systems: redundancy considerations and methods, different types of supply systems
  • Systems, considerations and layout
    – Propulsion support systems
    – Cooling
    – Lubrication
    – Fuel cleaning and supply (light and residual fuels)
    – Starting air
    – Survival systems
    – Hazard prevention (bilge systems, ballast system, ballast water treatment, inert gas)
    – Hazard detection
    – Hazard suppression (fire fighting, NBC, escape systems)
    – Hotel systems
    – Freshwater production and distribution|
    – Grey water and sewage collection and treatment
    – General support
    – Fuel loading, transport and storage
    – Heating systems (thermal oil and steam)
    – Chilled water
  • System components|
    – Pump types and characteristics: pump pressure rise for flow type and displacement pumps
    – Compressor and fan types and characteristics
    – Heat exchanger types and characteristics
    – Valves including remote control, flanges
  • System characteristics
    – System impedance
    – System impedance versus pump characteristic; determination operational point
    – Series and parallel operation of pumps and system branches

Participants are made aware of the cost implications of design choices, allowing them to make cost effective system designs. Thanks to its international setting, the course offers companies in the maritime cluster an excellent opportunity to gain knowledge and to network with colleagues, clients and/or suppliers. This will enable them to enhance their positioning as a partner in the shipbuilding process.

Target group and lecturers

This module is of interest to system designers, technical purchasers and superintendents. Lecturers include Prof. ir. Douwe Stapersma of the Delft University of Technology and the Royal Netherlands Naval College, ir. Peter de Vos and a professional of Econosto Nederland BV.
