Market Information

The shipbuilding industry in the United States covers several sectors, including the construction and maintenance of commercial marine vessels, naval vessels, luxury superyachts and barges. As well, ships for the offshore industry, both for the oil and gas industry and the emerging offshore wind industry fall under the heading of commercial marine vessels.

The current state of the shipbuilding industry in the United States is characterized by significant challenges, including high costs, inefficiencies and lagging behind international competitors. Building ships is significantly more expensive in the US. For example, building ships (such as CTVs, WTIVs and SOVs) for the offshore industry in the U.S. can be up to twice as expensive as in Europe or Asia. Because the shipbuilding industry in the U.S. is not very competitive, there are huge opportunities for companies from major shipbuilding countries. Especially for European companies that provide better quality products compared to Asian countries. Europe still has a large and tight network of suppliers and design offices, especially compared to the US.

Despite the problems in the US shipbuilding industry, the industry remains active thanks to the Jones Act, which requires ships sailing between US ports to be built in the US. Total revenues for the US shipbuilding and repair industry are estimated at $27.9 billion in 2019, compared with $26.9 billion in 2018.

The commercial seagoing vessel fleet is old and there is a need for replacement. Moreover, US shipyards are now increasingly focusing on emerging markets such as offshore wind, which requires new types of vessels.
