Market Information

The Middle East is an interesting region in offshore oil and gas and ship repair. The United Arab Emirates serves as a major hub in the region. Many ships are maintained and repaired in the United Arab Emirates. Well-known shipyards include Drydocks World, Goltens and Grandweld Shipyards.

The relatively high price of oil has led to a wave of new investment in oil, gas, and other infrastructure projects that has increased demand for workboats and service vessels. Yards such as Albwardy Damen in the UAE are benefiting. Furthermore, vessels for the Navy are also being built in the UAE; Abu Dhabi Shipbuilding is building a series of four 60-meter patrol vessels.

Other major ship repair yards in the region are Arab Shipbuilding & Repair Yard in Bahrain and Asyad Dry Dock in Oman. Work is also picking up at International Maritime Industries (IMI) in Saudi Arabia. IMI is a joint venture between Saudi Aramco, Lamprell, Bahri and Hyundai Heavy Industries. Divided into four zones, they plan to repair and build ships and offshore structures.

The fleet of Gulf owners numbers about 4,000 vessels of which something like 60% are UAE owners. The bulk of the UAE fleet consists primarily of offshore vessels/rigs (AHT, supply vessel, crewboats, drilling rigs), tankers, and tugs.
