Naval Maintenance and Sustainment Agency and Nevesbu sign contract for fleet-wide engineering support
Global threats demand the need for strong armed forces. Our Royal Navy plays an important role worldwide in safeguarding security and prosperity at sea and from the sea. The Dutch fleet currently consists of submarines and surface vessels such as frigates, minehunters and patrol vessels.
Many projects are planned for the coming years to maintain these vessels for as long as possible and to ensure optimum performance with safe and reliable equipment. The Naval Maintenance and Sustainment Agency (Directie Materiële Instandhouding (DMI)) is responsible for the upkeep of the fleet and has appointed Nevesbu as its engineering partner. Nevesbu will provide multidisciplinary engineering services for all Royal Navy vessels in the coming years.
A long history
DMI and Nevesbu have a long-standing history of collaboration. For many years, Nevesbu has maintained a framework contract with DMI for the upkeep of the Walrus class submarines. Nevesbu has also contributed to the upkeep of a large number of surface vessels on behalf of DMI. The modernisation of the air defence and command frigate HNLMS Evertsen is a recent example. The 'Fleet-wide Engineering Support' framework contract covers both submarines and surface vessels and will run for 48 months, after which it can be extended twice for a further twelve months. Examples of the multidisciplinary engineering services Nevesbu will provide DMI include vessel structure designs and mechanical and electrical installations.
Complex projects
DMI will outsource various engineering activities to Nevesbu in the coming years. The work is characterised by technical complexity. The missions for which the naval vessels are deployed are crucial. Plus, the safety of the crew must be guaranteed at all times. The requirements for naval vessels are highly stringent, and the space available on existing vessels often requires creative solutions. Therefore, designing naval vessels demands highly specialised skills. Nevesbu has been designing submarines and naval vessels since 1935 and has this expertise in-house.
