RONDAL’S HYDRO GENERATOR NOMINATED FOR DAME DESIGN AWARDS 2024
We are proud to announce that our Hydro Generator has been nominated for the DAME Design Awards 2024 in the Electronic & Electrical Systems category. This prestigious nomination highlights our innovation, chosen from a large pool of global entrants, underscoring the exceptional value and uniqueness of this development in sustainable yachting. This recognition is a testament to the hard work and expertise invested in creating a solution for sustainable sailing
Our Hydro Generator enables regenerative sailing for large yachts and operates independently of the propulsion system. This electric pod features fixed-pitch turbine blades and can deliver up to 15 kilowatts per unit. It is designed for low complexity and maximum efficiency during regeneration, making it an ideal solution not only for new yachts but also for existing yachts in refit projects.
When the Hydro Generator is not used for regeneration, the turbine spins in a minimum-drag freewheeling mode. The remaining drag has minimal impact on the yacht’s performance, with a speed reduction of no more than 0.1 kts, eliminating the need for complex retraction systems.
We developed the Hydro Generator in collaboration with Norwegian pod specialist SeaDrive and MARIN. The turbine was designed and optimized with advanced software tools and validated in MARIN’s towing tank, achieving an outstanding efficiency of 76%. Thanks to this innovative solution, sailing yachts no longer have to compromise on propulsion efficiency, as is the case with dual-purpose propellers. Existing yachts can enjoy the benefits of regenerative sailing without requiring modifications to the propulsion line.
The Hydro Generator family includes three models, each tailored to different yacht types and sailing speeds. The Hydro Generator 15000, the largest in the lineup, produces up to 15 kW of electricity and is optimized for large yachts cruising between 12 and 16 knots. The Hydro Generator 9000 Performance is ideal for yachts between 20 and 50 meters, with speeds from 9 to 14 knots, while the Hydro Generator 9000 High Speed model is designed for higher-speed vessels, including multihulls, with speeds up to 16 knots. These generators provide substantial electrical output, reducing reliance on diesel generators while sailing and allowing for a cleaner, more environmentally friendly experience with minimal impact on performance.
Being nominated for the DAME Design Awards reinforces our commitment to innovation and sustainability in the yachting industry. We look forward to showcasing the Hydro Generator at METSTRADE 2024 in our stand and continuing to develop technology that advances the industry
