State-of-the-Art Carbon Composite Deckhouse for Sailing Yacht
On Sunday night, a special transport departed from Emmeloord, from Randweg 22, heading towards Zwartsluis. This transport was to deliver a composite carbon fiber deckhouse to yacht builder Vitters. The structure measures 10 x 7 x 1.5 meters and weighs well under 2500 kg! VABO Composites was responsible for the engineering and construction of the deckhouse.
Composite material was chosen to save maximum weight and to take advantage of the material's design flexibility. For this project, in addition to "normal" carbon composites, "high modulus" carbon fibers and prepregs were also used. These are the state-of-the-art materials for building a product like this. Super lightweight, yet capable of handling the forces expected of a deckhouse on a 70-meter sail yacht.
It is already remarkable to build a 70-meter sail yacht, but this project is even more special. This project results in a sailing yacht that operates without the use of any fossil fuels by using renewable energy sources. For this reason, the electric truck from transport company Van Wieren from Emmeloord was chosen to transport the deckhouse to Zwartsluis. Later this year, another transport with a slightly smaller deckhouse, also destined for Vitters, will follow.
