Van Meer’s LTO EES System Certified for Maritime Safety

October 10 2024

Van Meer has recently obtained Type Approval (TA) certification for its LTO EES system from two prominent certification bodies, Bureau Veritas (BV) and Det Norske Veritas (DNV). This certification is essential for ensuring that the system meets safety and performance standards, allowing it to be installed on BV and DNV classed vessels. The certification process involves extensive testing and documentation to ensure compliance with international standards.

The TA certification for the Van Meer LTO EES system was comprehensive and demanding. The process
required the system's various components to undergo a series of stringent tests, including:

1. EMC Testing: Ensuring the system's electromagnetic compatibility with other onboard electronics.
2. Vibration Testing: Assessing the system's durability and reliability under the ship's operating
conditions.
3. Temperature and Humidity Testing: Confirming the system's resilience to extreme environmental
conditions.
4. Ingress Protection (IP) Testing: Verifying the system's resistance to dust and water.
5. Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEA): Analyzing potential failure points and their effects on
the system's operation.
6. Thermal Runaway Propagation Testing: Ensuring the system can safely manage
a thermal runaway event of a cell and prevent thermal runaway incidents between the cells in a
battery module.

Each of these tests ensures that the Van Meer’s Electrical Energy Storage (EES) system is not only
robust but also safe to use under various maritime conditions. The extensive documentation and
close collaboration with BV and DNV throughout the process ensures we meet the highest safety
standards for the end-products.

Partnerships
Van Meer's partnership with Toshiba, a leading cell manufacturer in Lithium Titanium Oxide (LTO)
technology, ensures the highest quality battery modules for their systems. Van Meer’s EES systems
have already been installed in several vessels and have demonstrated successful operation.
Innovative and modular
The innovative and modular cabinet design by Van Meer can easily be integrated during a ship's
construction phase or retrofit. The battery modules are designed for quick installation, reducing
downtime and simplifying the process.

Testing
Van Meer's in-house testing facilities enables the live simulation of load profiles, allowing us to
demonstrate the system's performance capabilities, including achieving the necessary C-rates. This
capability is a significant advantage, providing customers with tangible proof of the system's
performance
